Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are your ceramic pieces handmade?

Yes, every MUDsmith piece is handmade by me in my Byron Bay studio employing various sculptural hand-building techniques. Each work is entirely unique, embracing the natural variations that come with artisanal craftsmanship. Each lampshade is hand woven using naturally dyed raffia sourced within Australia.

2. Do you offer custom or commissioned pieces?

Absolutely. I create bespoke pieces tailored to your space, including ceramic lighting, wall sconces, sculptures, and furniture. Please reach out via the Contact page to discuss your project or vision. I can also come to your space in order to consult with you on what shape will work best within your habitat.

3. Can I request a custom glaze, shape, or size?

Yes—glaze, form, and scale can often be tailored to your needs depending on the piece and its intended use. Custom orders typically require a design consultation and a 50% deposit. You can order an IRL colour swatch to your door. This enables you to look at the colour and texture options of our glazes, clays, lighting cords and lampshade raffia within your habitat.

4. Where are you located?

MUDsmith is based in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. While I don’t currently have a walk-in retail space, studio visits may be available by appointment for clients or collaborators.

5. Do you ship internationally?

Yes, I ship worldwide using trusted courier services. All packages are carefully wrapped to ensure safe delivery. Shipping rates and times vary depending on location.

6. What is your turnaround time for orders?

All MUDsmith pieces are made to order to support a sustainable, low-waste production process. Once the design consultation is complete and your order is confirmed, the standard turnaround time is 8-12 weeks depending on the complication and size of your order.
If you need your piece sooner, an expedited turnaround may be possible for an additional fee—please enquire when ordering.

7. Are returns or refunds available?

Due to the nature of handmade work, I don’t offer returns for change of mind. If your piece arrives damaged or faulty, please get in touch within 5 business days with photographs, and I’ll arrange a suitable resolution.

8. Do you offer ceramic consultancy or interior styling services?

Yes. I offer ceramic design consultancy and interior styling for private clients, designers, stylists and architects. This includes material guidance, spatial styling, and bespoke ceramic integration. Please enquire for availability and pricing.

9. Can your lighting be installed by an electrician?

Yes, all ceramic lighting fixtures are designed with standard fittings suitable for licensed electricians to install. Wiring and mounting information is included with your order. All lamps include complete wiring by a licenced electrician. All you will require is an LED dimmable globe with our lampshade range. Porcelain globes are included with our lampshade-free designs.

10. Do you collaborate with interior designers or architects?

Yes—collaborations are one of my favourite ways to create site-specific work. If you’re an architect or interior designer looking to integrate ceramics into a project, I’d love to hear from you.

11. Are your pieces suitable for outdoor use?

Some pieces may be suitable for covered outdoor areas, but ceramics are sensitive to extreme weather. If you're planning outdoor placement, let me know so I can advise on appropriate finishes and construction.

12. How do I care for my ceramic piece?

Avoid placing ceramics in dishwashers, microwaves, or exposing them to drastic temperature changes or altering weather conditions (unless specified otherwise). Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Lighting should be dusted gently and kept away from moisture unless sealed. Ceramic objects are for indoor use unless otherwise specific or deigned specifically for outdoor use.
